The title of this work is taken from a poetic image at the beginning of the book Antifragile by Nassim Nicolas Taleb, to whom this work is dedicated. The initial chord forms the basis for much of the musical material in the work. The harmonic instability of the initial chord is brought into a more definite harmonic focus by the mallet percussion/harp/keyboards group, which plays this role throughout the work. After a number of episodes, the initial unstable chord returns before leading into the second movement, which is in the form of a long melody presented in a number of orchestrations. The third movement is a Scherzo which uses disparate elements to form a functional whole, with a more relaxed trio in the centre of the work, forming an arc within the arc of the movement. The final movement (which begins with definite chords derived from the unstable initial chord) may be seen as the portrait of a highly determined thinker whose energetic thought process permeates the entire movement.

Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder (2012) is Taleb's argument that certain systems — organisms, institutions, ideas — are not merely robust (they resist stress and return to their original state) but antifragile: they actively benefit from volatility, disorder, and stress. Fire, for example, is antifragile: add wind and it grows stronger. The title Du vent et du feu — "Of wind and fire" — captures this image: a force that is strengthened by the very thing that should extinguish it.
This concept maps directly onto the symphony's harmonic language: the initial unstable chord is not a problem to be solved but the generative source of all the musical material. Its instability is productive, not destructive. The mallet percussion/harp/keyboards group that clarifies this instability throughout functions not as a corrective but as a mediator — making the instability audible and functional without eliminating it. The work is itself antifragile in this sense: its material feeds on harmonic tension rather than resolving away from it.
Strings: 1·1·1·1·1 — one desk each of violin I, violin II, viola, cello, and double bass. The chamber string texture matches the reduced wind and brass forces, keeping the ensemble in a true chamber orchestra scale throughout.
