Jean Françaix
Jean Françaix (1912–1997) was a French composer with whom Paul Wehage worked until his death in 1997. Wehage had tried on several occasions to get Françaix to write a work for saxophone and orchestra; Françaix's Horloge de Flore exists in a version for soprano saxophone and orchestra — a partial realisation of this project. After Françaix died, Wehage conceived a work in memory of his friend and colleague, imagining what an original work for saxophone and orchestra by Françaix might have been like. While the work uses elements of Françaix's style, the thematic material and musical discourse is entirely original.

The Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra was written in 1999 and is dedicated to the memory of Jean Françaix, a composer with whom Paul Wehage worked until his death in 1997. After Françaix died, Paul Wehage had the project of writing a work to the memory of his friend and colleague as a means of wondering what an original work for saxophone and orchestra by Françaix might have been like. While the work uses elements of Françaix's style, the thematic material and musical discourse is entirely original. The work is in four movements, with an extremely virtuosic solo part for the saxophone. The orchestra is not just an accompanying ensemble, but takes an active part in the musical discourse.

Le Concerto pour Saxophone Alto et Orchestre est écrit en 1999 et dédié « à la mémoire de Jean Françaix », un compositeur avec lequel Paul Wehage a travaillé jusqu'à sa mort en 1997. Après la mort de Françaix, Paul Wehage a eu le projet d'écrire une œuvre à la mémoire de son ami et collègue dans laquelle il imagine ce que cette œuvre aurait été. L'œuvre utilise les éléments stylistiques de Françaix, mais les idées musicales et le matériau thématique restent entièrement originaux. Le Concerto est en quatre mouvements, avec une partie soliste extrêmement virtuose. L'orchestre n'est pas seulement un ensemble accompagnateur, mais prend une partie active dans le discours musical.
Four MovementsQuatre Mouvements
Perhaps the most overtly "Françaixian" of the four movements — a jaunty allegro theme which is developed throughout. The movement establishes the sunny, witty character associated with Françaix's music while remaining entirely Wehage's own thematic invention.

Written as a reaction to the illness and subsequent death of a close friend of the composer during the time of composition — adding a darker note to this essentially sunny piece. The Élégie provides the emotional weight and shadow that counterbalances the work's prevailing lightness.

A rather Spanish-sounding Scherzo with an important solo violin part which supports the solo saxophone. The Iberian flavour — characteristic of Françaix's wider musical geography — creates a dialogue between two soloists within the concerto texture.

A rhythmically demanding finale using tropical dance rhythms that Françaix enjoyed. Françaix drew on a wide range of dance idioms throughout his career; the finale honours this aspect of his musical personality with a technically demanding showcase for the saxophone's rhythmic agility.
