English

The Concertino for alto saxophone and string orchestra was written for and is dedicated to saxophonist Nuno Miguel Silva. The work is in three movements. The first movement, "Introduction and Allegro," begins with an introductory passage which leads to an extended cadenza. The Allegro uses a contrasting set of two themes, one of which is syncopated and dance-like, the other lyrical and expressive. The Aria which follows is in an ABA Lied form with extended passage work for the soloist at the return of the theme. The Rondo-Finale is a rollicking Scherzo which is presented in a variety of forms, first in the saxophone and then in the violins; after several developmental passages and a final cadenza, it returns to end the work with a final flourish.

Introduction · Allegro
The opening movement is in two distinct parts united by their shared thematic material. The Introduction opens with a lyrical passage in the saxophone — expressive and singing, establishing the soloist's voice before the full ensemble enters — which builds to an extended cadenza: a moment of pure soloist virtuosity, unaccompanied, exploring the instrument's full range before the Allegro begins. The Allegro proper exploits two contrasting themes: the first is syncopated and dance-like — rhythmically alive, with an energy that recalls the interwar French music that Wehage knows so well; the second is lyrical and expressive, the saxophone's cantabile voice given room to sing. The movement balances these two characters in a dialogue between soloist and strings.

Aria
ABA · Lied
The central slow movement is an Aria — the saxophone cast as a singing voice, in the tradition of the instrumental aria from Bach to the present day. The form is ABA Lied: a primary theme stated, a contrasting middle section, and a return of the opening — but when the theme returns, the soloist is given extended passage work, elaborating and ornamenting the melody with the kind of virtuoso decoration that a singer might improvise in a da capo aria. The strings provide a sustained, warm harmonic backdrop. This is the emotional centre of the work: the movement in which the saxophone's particular capacity for the human-voiced, breathing phrase is most fully exploited.

Rondo-FinaleRondo-Final
Rondo · Scherzo
The finale is a rollicking Scherzo-Rondo — the saxophone's most extrovert movement, combining the recurring refrain of the Rondo with the wit and energy of the Scherzo. The Rondo theme is first presented by the saxophone, then taken up by the violins — the dialogue between soloist and ensemble at its most playful and equal. After several developmental passages in which the material is transformed, expanded, and subjected to contrast, a final cadenza for the saxophone builds the tension before the Rondo theme returns one last time for a final flourish — a pirouette finale, as Wehage's French programme note calls it, that ends the work with wit and high spirits.

Concertino & ConcertoConcertino & Concerto

The FormLa Forme
Concertino
The concertino — literally "little concerto" — is a form with a distinguished history in the Baroque era (as the small solo group within the concerto grosso) and in the solo concerto tradition of the 18th and 19th centuries. A concertino is typically more compact than a full concerto: shorter duration, reduced forces, often a single movement or a suite of shorter movements. It places the solo instrument in dialogue with the ensemble without the large-scale structural ambitions of a full symphonic concerto. Wehage's three-movement structure — Introduction and Allegro, Aria, Rondo-Finale — follows the Classical fast-slow-fast concerto plan, but compresses it to the concertino scale: the result is a work of some 13'30" that covers the full range of expressive character without outstaying its welcome.

The Saxophone ConcertoLe Concerto pour saxophone
The Concertino exists alongside Wehage's full Concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra — a larger-scale work with full orchestra rather than strings alone. The two works together provide a performance pairing for saxophonist Nuno Miguel Silva: the Concertino for chamber or festival contexts (string orchestra only, rental parts), the full Concerto for orchestral subscription seasons. Wehage's deep knowledge of the saxophone's capabilities as a solo instrument — acquired through decades of performance and his own creative engagement with the repertoire — informs both works.
